The music on this recording has accompanied me for a long time. Like old friends who have traveled many years together, and still have much to say to one another, these melodies from Brittany, Scotland, Ireland, Bulgaria, Macedonia and Greece speak to me, and I reply in kind. There’s a story behind each of these musical companions, and each one carries a special meaning for me— the musicians who taught me the tunes, hours spent playing them together, and memories of places and times gone by. I hope you enjoy discovering their enduring beauty and will welcome them as your own, too.

Kate Eve - Phenomenology Order Number - kecd012007
Why ‘Phenomenology’ ?
Phenomenology is a disciplinary field in philosophy and useful in understanding and thinking about human experience. Literally, it’s the study of "phenomena" (events, experiences, occurrences, incidents) - the appearance of phenomena, or phenomena as they appear in our experience, or the ways we experience things, thus the meanings things have in our experience.
To me it sounded like the making of songs… Kate Eve
Invisible Boy - We're Going To Hang Your Picture High Order Number - ibcd012009
They have been called 'one of the best bands of their kind' by the editor of Drumbeat Magazine, but they almost never played a single note together.
It was 2003 when Townsend, the band's founder, took a vow of musical silence. "Music was kind of taking over my life" he says. "But after a long time it became clear that I was meant to be singing - not to get applause, but to give a gift. This is what the band is all about." Today the five unlikely friends are widely known for their lively and hopeful acoustic folk-pop, as well as their ability to connect deeply with audience members. Cuthbertson's singing can bring a bustling pub to a quiet hush; Townsend is a great storyteller; McKinnon performs with his heart on his sleeve; Glesain alternates between percussionist and comedian while Parsons, one of Tasmania's best bassists, does his best to keep a straight face amongst all the fun. Think Things of Stone and Wood, think Angus and Julia Stone, think Paul Kelly - it's all wrapped up in Invisible Boy and enjoyed by everyone from federal politicians to folk festival fans.

The tracks encompass a wide and varied range of styles under the dub and bass music banners.
Drum & bass is a fair portion of Cubits but it ranges from there to fat or dubby breaks to trip hop to lush cinematic styled downbeat and even a very percussive quirky house styled number. There is definitely a wide range of musical stylings happening on the album.

Murrumbidgee Jones - The Same Joke Twice Order Number - gecko003
The new release from Murrumbidgee Jones - The Same Joke Twice - is in stock now."The CD is a collection of ordinary, everyday images, but ones too often missed as we go about the exercise wheels of our lives, exemplified in "Brown Champagne"; and in "From an Aussie"; "fish and chips should be eaten down by the sea", or "when you're coffee's cold and the butter on your toast is stale" from "Magpie in the Distance". Amongst the everyday, there are some delightfully perceptive descriptions: "Catch a brace of currawongs/they'll fly like black angels in the sky", and "there's a shadow on a toenail moon" from "Toenail Moon"." - MR 2009

Putra Panji Asmara - Panji at Fed Square Order Number - PPACD2008
Putra Punji Asmara are a 10-piece gamelan ensemble based in Melbourne, who focus on the highly specialised gamelan tradition of Cirebon in West Java, under the direction of dancer & percussionist Michael Ewing. Gamelan music makes use of an astonishing array of tuned bells, brass pot-gongs, suspended gongs and metallophones (xylophone-like instruments), supported by several varieties of drums. On the surface the effect seems a little repetitive musically, but a closer listen reveals highly structured and complex patterns...this is, after all, “traditional classical” music. ... This recording is warm & bright, simultaneously soothing and lively, masterfully played and beautifully produced.
The Bard - In A Golden Dawn Order Number - SWCD2008

Jay Fraser - 3 days 7 lovers & the philistine Order Number - ja9002
"To stand out from the horde of singer-songwriters in the world of music you need something that marks you as being special; something that causes listeners to realise that they are not hearing more ho-hummery from wailing, angst-ridden, guitar-toting hopefuls. Jay Fraser demonstrates on this CD that he does have something special; that particular something having been developed over the years, and which is reflected in his impressive credentials prior to this release."
Balding and Croft - 40-40 Blues Order Number - merino0107
In 2007, blues veterans Gerry “GB” Balding and Ian “Croft” Beecroft recorded this collection of tracks at Croft’s bush property at Molesworth, with musician and mixer Malcolm Brooks engineering the live recording onto tape. The result is thirteen tracks of raw, natural and unpretentious blues, cutting a fat slice across this genre. This is a great CD, rounded off eloquently by the “Sporting Life Blues” (which, in an allegorical way, seems to sum up the whole genre), and would make a wonderful addition to the library of any blues aficionado. - Mike Raine 2008
This is the debut recording from Tasmanian troubadour Jay Fraser, a collection of his own songs performed "al fresco", alone with his acoustic guitar and the odd toot of harmonica. There are plenty of gorgeous moments on this album, simple love songs and honest memos from the heart, with melodic vocals both strong and sweet, and guitar delivered with plenty of feel. The production quality is crystal clear, lending a sunny sparkle to Jay's uncomplicated fingerpicking and strumming style, and the songs are delivered with true innocence and sincerity, a rare commodity among many nu-folkies.

Dream Awake - Temporary Shore Order Number - dacd002au
Released in December 2007, Temporary Shore is the second EP release from Dream Awake, the third from frontman / guitarist Josh Rubin, and Josh's musical vision just gets more finely-honed with each new turn. This is thoughtfully-crafted, intelligent acoustic rock, that carries a muscular power yet reveals many subtleties in its composition and delivery.
Overall this is yet another great release from a confident, intelligent & original trio with a strong sense of themselves despite their youth - not afraid to shine in the face of so much contemporary rock mediocrity. Buy both EPs and pretend you have an album!
Bradfield Dumpleton 2008
Chris Kayana Gudu hails from Bulawayo, Zimbabwe where he grew up not only playing musical instruments and singing with his brothers, but actually making the instruments, namely guitars and drums. "I even remember one time when my brother made a microphone which worked really well" he recalls.

It is better known back in southern Africa as Umbaqanga music which sometimes presents a touch of Afro jazz. Umbaqanga music originates from the streets and shebeens of Soweto, spreading all through and across southern Africa..

Huun Huur Tu - Best of Huun Huur Tu Live 1 Order Number - grcd2001-2

Altai Sayan Tandy-Uula is the 2004 studio album from Tuvan throat-singing ensemble Huun Huur Tu. "I've bought this CD after Huun-Huur Tu's performance in Prague last spring. Although I had all previous releases of this tuvan group, this was something absolutely outstanding, much more complex in music and arrangements than previous ones. Hats off. This is a masterpiece. The same can be said about Yat-Kha, Sainkho Namtchylak or Kongar-ool Ondar. Truly a sound of steppe. Mysterious, beautiful and inspiring."
Roman Stolyar - Missa Apocryph Order Number - elcd059
Siberian composer Roman Stolyar has shaped a remarkable, daring electroacoustic opera. Daring because of its musical architecture as well as because it approaches the controversial topic of the apocryphal gospels of Christianity.
Blending soloist vocals with operatic choirs with electronic accompaniments, rhythms typical of pop, some elements of jazz, backgrounds and cosmic passages, and providing the texts with equal doses of criticism and hope, Stolyar offers us a music between the beatific and the apocalyptic, the earthly and the unearthly.
The best theme in the album is, in my opinion, "Agnus Dei", the one closing the album. The cosmic, mysterious, majestic ambience achieved by the synthesizers is impressive, as well as the perfect fusion between them, the chants, the songs and the piano.-

Dhol Foundation - Drum-believable Order Number - tdf04001
... an album all about the dhol and the things you can do with it. "Drum-Believable" does a great job in depicting the various ways in which the dhol can be used effectively. Not once does it sound out of place on this album. They truly are taking the dhol to the wider world by not focusing on a specific audience, but instead targeting everybody. If TDF are the ambassadors of the dhol to the world, I, for one, am completely comfortable with it. This album gets 8.5 out of 10! For all you out there who can't picture the dhol outside of bhangra, take note now! This is the true definition of rhythm, dhol, and bass. If you're a "dholaholic" and you think you know the dhol, you know nothing till you've heard 'The Dhol Foundation.'

The American guitarist Joseph Bacon; a student of Andrés Segovia, has selected pieces from the Brazilian composer Heitor Villa-Lobos's more well known pieces for guitar, and gives the listener a small insight to the street music of Brazil in the first half of the 1900s. Bacon's playing is very clear, his tonal production is excellent and the sound produced is as if the guitar was sitting right in front of you. He captures the mood of the music effectively; both by his sense of space, dynamics and of course his exceptional technique.

José Ramos Santana & the Royal Philharmonic Orch. Order Number - fds57961
This 2003 release is a stunning display of ensemble musicianship and uniqueness. Both players individually display a competent technique that melts together in ensemble. The CD is divided into two parts; in the first part there are seven new works by American composers commissioned by this duo, and in the second part there are blues inspired classical works that at times sound more like a fusion of jazz and blues rather than classical. Jan Boland?s flute playing exhibits a full range of techniques including flutter tongue, bends, tongue flicking and a beautiful vibrato and tone. John Dowdall's guitar playing also presents a great range of techniques and a rhythmic groove that one could call very cool. - J.C., 2006

Bonita Boyd Plays Paganini - 24 Caprices Order Number - fds57940
"Lipsky's direction is sure and idiomatic, the record sound is first rate. Israelievitch's expressive arsenal includes portamentos at which even Elman might have blushed. The Fleur de Son collection of Bruch is a welcome addition to his undeservingly meager discography. We'll just have to recommend this recording and hope for more." . . . Fanfare

Pádraig Rynne - Bye A While Order Number - prynne2005

A fine release of soft swinging original jazz tunes from Tasmanian guitarist Andy Young, with excellent support from a tight combo of talented sidemen. CD now in stock. "A typical bebop combo replaced by horns with the warm, somber, punchy sounds of guitar in the tradition of Wes Montgomery. Young's single line playing achieves a mellow and expressive tone and the group's warm ambience includes lucid vibes and rustling high hats. Andy Young's compositions are both reverential and authentic due to the group's predisposition to the music, their individuality and their entirely impromptu recording. (DW)"
A scene altogether unworthy of depiction Order Number - indie0205
This debut album from Tasmanian based Daniel Townsend is not without its flaws, but some good songwriting and originality with a dash of social critique gives this album something to offer.
- "A singer-songwriter worthy of a good evaluation, Daniel Townsend is a welcome relief. He speaks to the things in your heart which you haven't found the words for yet. His voice could very well be our voice." Kris Adams - Coast FM
Stephen "The Bard" Whitehead - Sands of Time Order Number - indie0201
In Sands of Time, Australian singer and guitarist Stephen 'The
Bard' Whitehead presents a collection of original folk/country/rock
tunes. Whitehead's influences might be Australian greats of the folk
scene, Archie Roach, Neil Murray and Shane Howard or even Troy
Cassar-Daley. There's sadness and hopefulness to the music on this
album and the lyrics are very personal. Whitehead prides himself on
being a storyteller of great soulfulness and there is certainly
earnestness in his work. Guitar - acoustic and electric, dominates the
arrangements, with piano, organ, synth, strings, and drums giving the
arrangements a very full and dynamic 80s sound. There are a few
instrumentals which show off Whiteheads guitaring dexterity and offer
an interesting contrast to the vocal based songs.
The Pangolin Band has a sound that you can try to define but good luck doing so. They hail from Melbourne Australia and rarely do I have the
opportunity to hear a band from this part of the globe, and when I do, it is always a treat. Down under has yielded some of the greatest music
stars; however, you do not hear too much talk about it ... you cannot help but love it. OK I think I have said my piece, check this CD out; it will be one of the best decisions you make this year
to find something new and interesting in music.

Edward Artemiev - As Far As My Feet Will Carry Me Order Number - elcd045
Artemiev's score to the 1988 film version of As Far As My Feet Will Carry Me directed by Hardy Martins is a powerful portrayal in sound of the true story of the incredible journey undertaken by German soldier Clemens Forrell in his dramatic escape from a Siberian labour camp. Set against a backdrop of desolate and inhospitable landscape, beset by danger both from animals and humans, constantly battling the worst nature can throw at him, Forell makes his way step by step, kilometre by kilometre, towards Persia and longed for freedom. In their own words, Hooray For Everything is 'a subversive socio-political wank rock comedy/ boy band'. I can't top this description, which pretty much says it all. Grand Finalists in JJJ's 2003 Raw Comedy and many other comedy festivals, this is their first album. Their music is a diverse cousin of 'rock', featuring guitars, bass and drums, brass, harmonica, a string quartet, a children's choir, ukelele, trombone, tuba and keys. Their are some great arrangements, plenty of laughs, and no seriousness at all. Hooray for Everything is Phil Driver, Matt Emery and Steve Driver, this is their first album.

These people are profoundly musical, and their playing is polished and refined and never lacking in feeling ..." - American Record
Paul Winn - self titled debut CD Order Number - indie0197
"If I had to describe Paul's sound, think Sting meets Jeff Buckley - with a bit of Dave Mathews thrown in for good measure. Although a talented guitarist, Paul?s voice is really what sets him apart from others. He sings with passion and a sincerity that is quite rare and very engaging. Paul has written a strong album " - CD available now.

various artists - "Salt & Pepper" Showcase 2005 Order Number - faa006
The shiny new Nekropolis 23 DVD "Tidal shift", featuring Chris Karrer of Amon Düül II-fame, and Peter Frohmader, is now available for ordering. The 105 minute DVD is PAL format, region code free. Nekropolis 23 celebrate music as "extemporaneous action" - collective improvisation. This is something known from Freejazz. But Peter Frohmader and his band speak the language of Rock. They don't care for unending, tentative, resultless experimentation. Booming bass riffs, stylish keyboards and percussive action leave no doubt about that - and yet these ingredients are combined with irritating harmonic and melodic liberties. One could perceive the resulting aural puzzles as bizarre, angular, psychedelic, even refreshing. In any case they force the audience to let go of familiar standards, to feel and experience the music ad-hoc - like the musicians themselves.
Airom Bleicher and Lorraine Campbell a.k.a. Sailfish Pantry, have produced another fine CD of mostly very downbeat electronica in Brenton. This is excellent music from artists who deserve to be far more widely known and appreciated than they are.

"The second full-length album by UK dark synth lurkers Munkie brings more of
their ambient style and haunted vocals together with trip-hop beats and
deep, under-the-floor bass." - JH, 2005.
Pamela Zero - Living Backwards Order Number - dacd004 (also da-0-1)
Pamela Zero is a member of a collective of multimedia artists known as Discord Aggregate. Based in San Francisco, since the mid 90s they have dedicated themselves to driving back the perceived boundaries of creative art in music, images, spoken word and performance art. Discord Aggregate - The Texture of The Sky Order Number - dacd003
Despite its intractability, and the fact that as an overall experience it's often uncomfortably like being trapped in an elevator with a performance art troupe, The Texture of the Sky is oddly vibrant. It's full of life and energy, bubbling over with a seething desire to create, create, create, to push at the boundaries of art and entertainment. "
- George Zahora, Splendid Ezine
Discord Aggregate - Attack of the Absolute Zeros Order Number - dacd001
"You've probably heard little or nothing like Attack of the Absolute Zeros before. Its creators describe it as a "non-opera", and that's pretty apt -- while bearing some conceptual similarities to opera, it's about as close to your average Puccini work as a nuclear explosion is to a candle flame. Attack... lives up to its name -- a dizzying combination of acapella vocals, freeform jazz, spoken narration, cut-and-paste sound effects and other sonic distractions."
Amada - The Dancing Gaida Order Number - amadacd04
"From the opening Peace Creature, with its danceable insistence and jazzy Latin emotive brass section featuring adventurous contemporary composer and saxophonist Jeff Henderson, Nick van Dijk - trombone and Tahu Tikimaui - trumpet, I'm hooked to the last note of the final song, Aah." - NZ Musician

"The album is essentially just a great rock album with tunes to kill for and words that take you into the minutiae of love affairs, to the heartland of Australia, back to childhood and across imaginary bridges to safe havens. It is essentially an album about travel - in both the literal and emotional sense. Beautifully produced, the album is a master class in musicianship and singing." - Mudhutter mag UK

"This is someone comfortable with their cultural roots but happy to explore these in the bigger world of musical possibility and invention." - IP 2005
"I love this record! ... Though completely contemporary in arrangement, beautiful songs... easily retain their deeply powerful, heartfelt inspiration and spiritual import. (RebbeSoul) is able to make truly unique world music that is completely enjoyalble for all ages. This disc has spent more time inside my CD player than almost any other in recent memory. It is simply a must-have." - New Age Retailer
Common Tongue - Step into My World Order Number - ctcd01
"Fun, funky, futuristic...idealistic. Get ready to groove in the New Age... Layers of international instrumentation: kalimba, gypsy-sounding percussion, and stringed melodies support Lynn Rose's sultry vocals to produce danceable world panache! From the killer duet of Radio Man, to the protest-rant-groove-spoken word of I've Seen God (and she's a lesbian), This CD charmed my headphones off me. My long-forgotten rock 'n' roll soul was stirred by the wailing guitar of White Rabbit. World music with a counter-culture twist." - Radio V

Bruce Boyd - Rainbow Reflections Order Number - ind190
Bruce Boyd's CD Rainbow Reflections mixes a number of stylistic influences that make appearances throughout, as evidenced in tracks like "Mt. Lindesay" - a Dave Moore (Pink Floyd) styled piece, while "Mazzoloti Beach" is a 6 min 22 secs Baroque chamber piece, backed by a new age sensibility that features a windswept, surf-crashing soundscape. "Karri Groves" follows and brings you into an Australia of colonial musings, a journey along the dusty coastal roads of Denmark and its unique flora. The "Somerset Hill Jigs" round out a very pleasant album, an English Folk set if ever there was one, and is inspired by the local vineyards of the district. "La joie du Anglais!"

"Tonchi McIntosh, remember the name. If all things are equal in the music industry, especially in Australia, McIntosh's name would
not need to be remembered. It would be before the public's eye simply for the talent associated with it.Bridges is his debut album and its maturity of songs and their impressive execution belies his relative recording inexperience." - Warwick MacFadyen, The Age. "Thank you, I understand the soul of Australia a bit better after listening to you." - Dick Gaughan.

Australian stories written and sung by one of the better of the current crop of Australian songwriters - and that's a major compliment considering the depth of talent on offer just now. "Concept CDs are always a challenge. It's hard to avoid losing focus on the musical exercise which a CD needs to be in the service of the idea. Ulrich does quite well and for the Pagan/Celtic Christian spiritualist and those who like a medieval feel to their music this is a CD well worth adding to your collection." IP 2005
Pole is the first and only co-operation, where both were working as musicians, between Jean Louis Rizet and Philippe Besombes. This double album, recorded in 1976, shows a more serious side of the artists, with a leaning toward contemporary classical. Showing their interest in more electronic and electro-acoustic ideas. Maybe reminiscent of Faust in sections, it is also similar to Lard Free, Heldon 'Third' and close in spirit to The Cosmic Jokers. While many guest musicians appear on the album, the core is Besombes-Rizet experimenting on electronics, synths, and mellotron.
The 76-minute MIO release is completely remastered.
Carl Pannuzzo - The Passing Eye Of The Sun Order Number - ind164
"This is a highly enjoyable and effective set, with lots of classy, grooving arrangements that will have you happily swaying and swinging as you flip your morning eggs or dust your mantelpiece. But a deeper listening reveals this set is about something a lot deeper.
Khaled Sabsabi - Disctionary Order Number - kscd002
Disctionary is the work of Sydney-based sound artist Khaled Sabsabi who works more generally with visual mediums. He has been good enough to provide us with what sound like the tracks to his instillations, a series of churning sound-pieces designed to disturb.
Khaled Sabsabi - Peacefender Order Number - kscd001
The music of Misinterprotato is composed completely by the trio, full of clarity and space with strong melodies and surprising contrasts from one moment to the next. A distinct and strong aesthetic based on the band's appreciation of contemporary European jazz such as Bobo Stenson Trio, Tord Gustavsen and Esbjorn Svennson Trio is evident in Misinterprotato. However, while Foran's compositions frequently explore dense harmony and odd time signatures Misinterprotato also enjoy the freedom of groove and vamp based interaction and "Minimalist' style free improvisation and compositional techniques.
Tony Gorman - Songs Of Hope Order Number - TGCD0012
This is an album of intensely beautiful and meditative music on clarinet from Tony Gorman - this is sparse, dreamy, immaculate, drifting music with great power. "The long, beautiful notes ooze from the instrument, then hang reverberating in the air, as if to further emphasise their emotional power. Multiphonics are frequently employed to profound effect, fleshing out each of Gorman's tales, which carry such reflective titles as Live With the Sea in My Dreams, Country Winds and Unfulfilled Dreams. Fans of Jan Garbarek will be among those likely to be mesmerised." review by John Shand, for "Limelight" June 2004
Strange Sea is a superb CD from a well established musician. Using mostly rock styles, with sometimes a verging towards acoustic folk/rock, this album of well constructed songs is both original and strong. There's excellent playing from the whole band, great guitar work from Miller, at times driving rock, at others more contemplative moods. My own favourite tracks on this album are "Waltzing Too Long" and "Dark Cafe". Although "On The Silence" would slot comfortably into a Pogues album, Miller's tracks have a distinctive voice. The whole CD has a big sound , you'll find this album grows on you with each listen through. - Malcolm Fielding, indie-cds.com
Ben Scott - The Sydney Cove Project Order Number - bsc001
A collection of important, historical songs, well played, which illuminates an unsung time in Australia's early colonial history with great insight and style. Ben Scott's determined effort to record a long ignored time in Australian history works very well. These intensely interesting songs, thoughtfully written, create a highly accessible documentary of the first years of colonial occupation in Australia.
Frohmader/Fuchs-Gambock - Das Ist Alles Order Number - ncd008
Dark, oppressive, heavy, moody music from the maestro of German synthesizer. In an experimental rock context, Frohmader makes a claim by his discography to be one of the most consistently uncomprising and original musicians around today. In this album, you'll encounter a range of moods, which share a dark and unique intensity. Michael Fuchs-Gambock is the other partner in this very successful collaboration, in which Frohmader's music is is fitted around verbal concepts from F-G - another winner from Munich. Beat driven and with a sound that's huge in scale, this is classic German synth music.
If Peter Frohmader can be said to have a style, perhaps variation is it. This album shares the core elements of synthesizer domination, incorporation of samples, sections of fast (and fat) beat dominated sounds that have become something of a trade mark for this German artist. "Ethereal Dance" is a case in point of the latter - upbeat funky weirdness at is best, excelled by "Java Talk", a synth track that could have them rocking on the dance floors. Synthesizer fans with a taste for the eclectic and unpredictable will enjoy this a lot. On this as on one or two other previous CDs, Frohmader produces all the necessary phonics without the intervention of other musicians.
Schedel, Merz & Frohmader - Attenti Al Treno! Order Number - ncd005
This is a rather disjointed collection of work by the three named musicians, each of whom has their own separate section on the CD. There doesn't seem to to be much cohesion between the three, maybe I am missing the point here. On the face of it there seems no real reason why these works belong together on one disc, unless one accepts that they are equally disturbing or unsettling in their style. One of the less accessible recordings from the Nekropolis stable.
Nekropolis / Peter Frohmader - Anubis Dance Order Number - ncd010
On this fine album Frohmader combines elements of synthesizer work, samples, beats, and programming to amazing effect. One of the most beat centred of his albums, tracks such as the title Anubis Rising would be at home on the dance floor as much as a chill zone tent in an electronica festival. Strong middle-eastern flavours permeate some tracks the album. Powerful driving afro beats overlaid with glass-like synth fragments and mysterious semi-audible choral messages carry the listener into trance territories ...Excellent.

Artemiy Artemiev - Time, Desert and A Sound Order Number - elcd038
"Artemiy Artemiev offers us a masterful album inspired in the vastness of the deserts. Through the five themes of the CD, the listeners can easily recreate in their imagination the desolate landscapes of The Desert, the adventures, sometimes tragic, that its explorers experienced, and the atmosphere of those regions. By skillfully utilizing synthesizers, the composer creates arid textures, mysterious, near to "ambient", in the most unsettling parts of the work. Other passages could be labelled within the "electroacoustic music". There also are some touches of "world music"." - Edgar Kogler ("Amazing Sounds
Roderik de Man - Electrified Music Order Number - elcd040
"Who would have guessed that behind such unpretentious title as this one hides maybe the richest "minimal" music I've ever heard. Yes, this is such stunning music. This man is a true genius when he can create such intense, shrill compositions with for example only recorders and tape, or just tape. Further on piccolo, Bassethorn, trumpet and more leave their definite mark in other tracks. It's all eerie, haunting, breathtaking, full of twists and wayward in its own character. ..."Roel Stevernik ("Expose")
Antanas Jasenka - An Artist and a Plane Order Number - elcd039
"In this album, Antanas Jasenka explores the hidden regions between "ambient" and "minimalism". The six compositions that integrate this CD, mostly based on unusual architectures of sound and electroacoustic collages, take us to an impressive adventure towards "The Unknown". " - Dominique Chevant ("Amazing Sounds")
Ian McDowall & Dirt Road Band - Red Dirt Country Order Number - pit102
"Ian McDowall has deepened his light country roots with this set. It's a lovely jogging-along-the-road CD. It's full of gently sentimental tales that give you warm fuzzy feelings, broad grins and a glimpse of Aussy rural life in a natural, unpretentious way. Good fun and well done." - Ian Paulin.
Ian McDowall - In My Father's Land Order Number - pit101
"Ian McDowall presents a very pleasant set of songs. He's recorded and arranged his music with a clear understanding of his genre and audience. If you're into a light folk/country mix, you'll really enjoy this set. My Father's Land is good company." - Ian Paulin
Electroacoustic Music Volume VIII Order Number - elcd036
"This is another compilation disc in the stable of Electroshock Records. It is difficult to write a review about a compilation CD and certainly when it contains minimalistic, electroacoustic, low-fi, experimental music. ... If you like calm, classical, ambient, avant-garde experimental music you must explore this new compilation album of Electroshock Records (and of course also all the previous ones)." - Peter-Jan van Damme ("Darker Than the Bat")
Valery Siver & Kiryll Trepakov - Midway Order Number - elcd035
"Themes of a surreal sound, where acoustic guitar is wrapped within electronic effects. Rhythms near to classical Techno, the Industrial or the Ethnic. Melodies of an enigmatic nature at times, and romantic on other occasions. These are the main traits of "Midway", an imaginative album which can be more or less labelled within New Instrumental Music, although with the peculiarities already described. Both artists succeed in shaping a very personal, unmistakable style." -
Eduardo Fontana ("Amazing Sounds")
" Roman Stolyar was born in 1967 and presents "Credo" that is filled with experimental classical music. With piano, flute, and other instruments he creates songs with jazz influences, classical orientations and hints to popular tunes. Sometimes you think a TV show is beginning. We have to wait until track 5 to hear some vocals. That is because the CD is divided in three parts. The second part is called "Songs of the Season" (vocal suite) and holds four songs. The track Meditation ends the album that reminds me of Frank Zappa." - Peter-Jan Van Damme ("Darker Than the Bat")
"The music in this album by Richard Bone explores new, imaginative regions of Ambient, yet it never falls into chancy experimentation. Although there are static passages, many others possess complex orchestrations, and even rhythmic sections that, even if they are slow, they do provide the music with a strong vitality. The melodies range from the space atmosphere to the romantic, at times with a triumphant air, while at other times it presents a subtle melancholy. " - Jorge Munnshe ("Amazing Sounds")
Victor Cerullo - Visions - a homage to Tarkovsky Order Number - elcd032
"Impressive, this album - homage to the departed film maker Andrei Tarkovsky. Victor Cerullo reflects in his music some of the main elements from the best known movies by this genius. Edward Artemiev, who composed sountracks for several of the most remarkable movies by Tarkovsky, has praised this album. "Visions" is electronic music that flies among the darkest side of Ambient, wondrous space symphonism, and a melancholy romanticism of a great strength, which acquires the connotations of a Greek tragedy. "Last Scene" is, most probably. the most impressive theme in the entire album. " - Edgar Kogler ("Amazing Sounds")
A Artemiev & C de Laurenti - 57 Minutes To Silence Order Number - elcd029
"As if inspired by the ghosts of an abandoned mine, this album permits the listener to look through a series of windows towards places where our earthly reality never reaches. The treatment of sound that the artists have given the pieces puts any natural sound or any sound that could be created with a musical instrument far away from us. They make spooky whispers paint terrifying melodies, as if they were transmissions from feral regions of cosmic devastation or from the dark depths of hell." - Dominique Chevant ("Amazing Sounds")
Anatoly Pereslegin - Fastgod: E-Psalms Order Number - elcd028
"... an interesting electronic neo-classical album with somewhat medieval influences and an experimental approach to the blend of the ingredients. Looped sequences, churchy synthesized sounds, soft string pads holding long chords, organs playing lines, harpsi-chord-like sounds playing fast sequences repeating forever, heavenly bells punctuating high chords or creating intertwined textures in the background and ghostly synth voices are the main sounds you will hear..." - Mark Urselli-Scharer ("Chain D.L.K.")
Electroacoustic Music Vol VII - 2002 Order Number - elcd026/elcd027
The 2002 release in Electroshock's series of cutting edge and experimental music compilations. "This is art with a capital "A", there are no commercial considerations here, no pop hits. The two CDs contain a total of twenty tracks, and feature artists from right across the world....It has to be said that the contents on this double CD is in no way easy listening. It represents a challenge for anyones' ears, including mine - one really needs an appreciation of the surreal and perhaps the bizarre to even gain a foothold with the sound presentation on this double album." - John Peters ("The Borderland")
Singer songwriter Elena reaches back into her ethnic origins to draw strength from her ancestors by integrating Polynesian, Celtic and Afro-American music, to produce a fresh, personal and vibrant musical style. As well as addressing the current hot topic of environmental destruction in Australia, her songs speak of love lost and found, death, growing up on a cattle station, friends in crisis - original songs about universal topics, sung with emotion and conviction.
The Counterfeit Gypsies - Wonky Donkey Order Number - TCG0002
The 2004 CD from energetic gypsy & klezmer band the Counterfeit Gypsies keeps pretty much to the successful formula established on their first release "Music to Vacuum To" (also available via indie-cds.com). The fast dance tunes and kit drums percussion dominate the album, which is also interspersed with a few slower selections and even a song. Mostly the style is fast instrumental dance music, that won't disappoint their existing fan base or anyone looking to party with some good-time up-tempo gypsy tunes.
The Counterfeit Gypsies - Music to Vacuum To Order Number - TCG0001
The band describe their own music on this CD as "... a collection of traditional Eastern European tunes performed with an ethos reserved generally for heavy metal and hardcore dance bands." An accurate description, and this music is for the most part high energy dance music, that will be great to party (or vacuum) to! The CD does have other more medium tempo tunes as well, and is a good selection of gypsy music with a modern but still authentic feel.
Dave McFarlane - Sometimes the Best Laid Plans Order Number - IND137
Dave McFarlane has spent half a lifetime writing and performing vibrant and uniquely Australian 'musical snapshots'... powerful and entertaining conversations about life and issues that can be related to universally.
Backed by band 'ONE DAY' unplugged folk energises into dynamic acoustic rock with trademark roots instruments, infectious rhythm and soaring harmonies.
Chris Sprague & Glen Kneibeiss - Resonance Order Number - IND136
On this debut CD, Melbourne based musicians Chris Sprague and Glenn Kneibeiss explore the concept of crossing musical boundaries, or blending elements from different traditions.
Sprague plays the oud, and brings material from the traditions of Morocco, Algeria, Turkey and Iran. To these he adds improvisational playing in the maqams (or scales) of music from the southern and eastern end of the Mediterranean, where the oud has been established for centuries as the chosen instrument of the finest players of classical and traditional styles. Percussionist Glen Kneibeiss, whose chosen instrument is the Indian tablas, is steeped in the rhythmic methods, beat patterns and techniques of traditional Indian music.
"Resonance is that rare thing, a truly creative and unexpected crossing of different cultures." - fROOTS
Various artists - Talloonne - double CD Order Number - HVEC01
Tal.loon.ne is a local indigenous name for the Huon River, in Southern Tasmania, which twists and turns through a landscape of ancient forests and wild valleys. This is a landscape that is currently being destroyed at an alarming rate by industrial forestry. Woodchips are the main export from Tasmania's forests. Tasmania produces more than double the amount of woodchips than any other state of territory in Australia. Tal.loon.ne is a double CD compilation of music donated by Tasmanian, Australian and international artists who are concerned for the future of Tasmania's forests. The funds raised from this CD will go to The Huon Valley Environment Centre and the Native Forest Network, who will fund campaigns for the protection of Tasmania's high conservation value forests.

J. Cohen-Solal - Flutes Libres, Capt Tarthopom Order Number - mio025
This re-issue combines two original vinyl albums from Jean Cohen-Solal - Flutes Libres (Musiques et Instruments Insolites), and Captain Tarthopom. While almost completely unknown outside of France, Jean Cohen-Solal deserves to sit with the most famous progressive and experimental rock bands. The innovation and complexity of this music invites comparison with Tangerine Dream, Pink Floyd (Ummagumma era) , Magma, Focus, and Jethro Tull.
The French band Mosaïc from the 1970s played music on the borderlines of jazz, avant-garde and progressive rock, and counted among their inspirations artists like Jimi Hendrix, and later progressive rock groups like Soft Machine, Hatfield and the North, Henry Cow, King Crimson, Magma, Gong, and many other French progressive groups. In 1978, the band recorded their only album at studio Pense-folie in the south of Paris. Ultimatum was produced by the "Mosaïc association Ekimoz" as a private pressing. Collectors all over the world are willing to pay a lot to lay their hands on this cult album. This CD includes the classic and very rare album from 1978 plus music from the 1977 cassette Cuvée 77 and more!
The Platina - The Girl with the Flaxen Hair Order Number - mio030
The Platina were formed in 1971 by Roman Kunsman and Aaron Kaminsky when Israel's famous singer Arik Einstein called Kaminsky to ask about starting a new band. Kunsman and Kaminsky were joined by another famous guitarist, Itzhak (Churchil) Klepter, and the American bass player Paul Silver was brought in. During The Platina's existence from 1971 to 1976, Kaminsky and Kunsman formed the core of the group. During those years, The Platina was the official representative jazz group from Israel. They toured Israel during this period, and made four albums, but only two of them were released officially: "Live at Barbarim" and "Freedom". This album is a new release from 1976 recordings by the band.
Philippe Besombes - Libra vol 1 Order Number - mio008
Conceived as the soundtrack (and, in fact, the ONLY sound in the movie) for the avant-garde film Libra, the music on this 1973 album ranges in style from electronic pop mixed with music concrete ala Parmegiani/Henry to psychedelic exercises, progressive rock, and fusion.
The album includes a mix of rock musicians and electronic treatments, a very new way of working at this time. Bonus tracks include three cuts from the same sessions that have never been released before. Another long, experimental prepared minimalist piano piece is included.
This self-titled CD, the first proper album from this Slovenian group, was originally released on vinyl in 1982. Traces of jazz and 'new music', and a remarkable sense of humor have been injected into the concoction. But the ethnic elements that marked the early recordings of the band are still obvious. Bratko's accordion, Bogo's clarinet, the rhythmic and melodic structure of the tunes are underscored by more electric instrumentation and a firm rhythmic structure borrowing from rock music that lends the recording a curious mixture of chaotic atmosphere, surprise, melancholy, and central, south and eastern European folk musical traditions. The music has strong melodies, contrasts of harmonic and discordant structures and dramatic changes in rhythms and time structures. Another classic re-release from MIO records.
Daniel McKay - Daniel McKay Order Number - AMC2350
On this CD classical guitarist Daniel McKay treats us to a collection of works from Brouwer, Bogdanovich, Castelnuovo-Tedesco and Piazzolla.
Daniel is considered one of Australia's finest guitarists of the younger generation. This, along with his interest in contemporary Australian music and considerable ensemble playing skills, led in 1998 to an invitation to join Guitar Trek, widely recognised as among the very best of Australia's chamber ensembles. Daniel has been a major prizewinner in many competitions, most recently the 2002 Australian Guitar Competition, and has been heard in numerous live broadcasts for ABC radio in solo (including his prizewinning performance in the Australian Guitar Competition), duo and quartet performances.
Formed in 2002, HOOT has been created to showcase the compositions of Radha Claridge and Robert Jackson, saxophonists with distinct styles and
directions. Drawing on eclectic musical influences HOOT has developed its own unique blend of modern jazz and funky grooves, creating a captivating and enticing atmosphere. The melodies go from the lyrical to the spiky, supported by a diverse range of spicy rhythms.
"This is beautiful music - I am struck by the energy, the vitality and the enthusiasm of it." - Paul MacNamara, fellow jazz traveller.
Barb Dwyer - Riding the Wild Gurdy Gander Order Number - IND134
An inspired combination of traditional tunes and songs from different genres, combined with Barb's own tunes and inimitable style. Wild women in them there hills in NSW... From a fabulous version of the Greek song "My Aching Breast" to Turkish songs about frolicking sheep, and Barb's song sung in gnome language, this a rich and diverse mix presented with rich arrangements and fine musicianship.
A unique sound and style from this talented artist based in the Northern Rivers area of New South Wales. Her music is an eclectic and contemporary tapestry of strands from various areas and styles. The hurdy-gurdy, Barb's feature instrument, lends a mediaeval feel, and guest players that include Linsey Pollak and Mal Webb, add a quality edge. Highly individual music that doesn't fit neatly into categories.
Brisbane duo Jeremiah is both traditional and contemporary. The music is comfortably familiar yet completely fresh, combining a respect for the past with a desire to say something new, continuing the best story-telling tradition of the singer-songwriter. Their sound is stripped back and intimate, making use of fiddle, accordion, mandolin and threadbare acoustic guitar. It's a kind of back verandah folk/country/roots music inspired by the likes of Gillian Welsh, Steve Earle, Johnny Cash and Townes Van Zandt.
Antanas Jasenka - Deusexmachina Order Number - ELCD025
"Deusexmachina" is a large, complex, multi-faced work, whose controversial ambiguity is encoded in its every title. The antithesis of its meanings also lies in the symmetrical-oppositional sound construction, wherein the composer frequently combines totally contradictory textures: gentle elegiac piano tones & somnambulist whisperings are "bombarded" with sharp electronic noises. An ambient impassive tranquility is annihilated by expressive surrealist outbursts, while maniacal passions are tamed by the halters of an exalted prayer." - Raimundas Eimontas ("Tango")
"In Tibetan Buddhism, there exist states of consciousness, or "bardos", possible to be attained by the enlightened, four of which are explored by Italian sound artist Oophoi on his latest CD release. All his previous output has inclined toward the slowly-shifting and meditative, and "Bardo" no less so. This is the sound of the universe, or the soul, or the universal soul, breathing in, breathing out. What is daunting about Oophoi is how, always mustering roughly the same arsenal of instruments (synthesizers, gongs, Tibetan singing bowls, wind instruments and electronic effects), his every release seems so fresh and varied. As do each of the four tracks on this CD on Artemiy Artemiev's Moscow-based "Electroshock Records". Each track is accompanied by a short note describing the state of consciousness being conjured up ("contemplation", "dissolution (of the mental and physical self)"). Exquisite throughout, it concludes beautifully with the simulation of a slow, growling Buddhist chant." - Stephen Fruitman
A. Artemiev & P. Klinger - A Moment of Infinity Order Number - ELCD022
"Exploring the darkest frontiers of ambient, these two composers show us one of the most radical aspects in their respective styles. Five electronic pieces, featuring an infinity of disquieting sounds coming and going, constitute sinister paintings, capable of making us imagine descents into caverns brimming with unearthly beings, or astral voyages beyond the limits of space or time." -
Edgar Kogler ("Amazing Sounds")
A.Artemiev & Peter Frohmader - Transfiguration Order Number - ELCD021
"Transfiguration" is an album of many moods, at times forceful but also laid back, it ranges from avant-garde to commercial electronica, but it is always listenable and at times quite stunning in its range of sounds and their musical manipulation. It's difficult to allot credit to either musician, their individual styles have merged seemlessly together here. Another winner for "Electroshock Records".
John Peters ("The Borderland")
Artemiy Artemiev - Forgotten Themes Order Number - ELCD017
"Forgotten Themes" mainly consists of pleasant, rhythmic electronic compositions. If you enjoy the soundtrack music of Tangerine Dream then you will most definitely enjoy this CD. Standout tracks in my opinion are the moody spatial electronics of "Space Distortion" and the gloomy electronics-possessing grandeur of "Realm of Shadows". The sombre violin music on this composition makes the piece outstanding." -
Robert Maycock ("Lockjaw")
Electroacoustic Music Volume V Order Number - ELCD013
"The samplers of electroacoustic music of Electroshock Records display the great merit of having broken the frontier among artists of a classical education and artists formed in the culture of Rock, Pop, and other genres traditionally regarded as "little serious" by the supporters of the most retrograde of conservationisms. Fortunately, such initiatives as those developed by this label allow the audience to listen to the sound adventures by creators from all origins, and in doing so, the listener can realise that, in their different trends, all these artists follow a given common path, which is to progress with their music towards the unknown, to offer the listener new continents of sound." - Edgar Kogler.
Artemiy Artemiev - Mysticism of Sound Order Number - ELCD009
This album takes the ambient blueprint of "Five Mystery Tales of Asia" and moulds it into four highly atmospheric pieces... The textures are very evocative and the mixes draw you into distant sounds making fuel for the imagination... There are also far away koto like sounds that carry on the lineage that began with the previous albums' eastern flavour." - Richard Wileman ("AM" Magazine)
This CD features Lori Bailey, a descendant of the Bidjara clan of the Kunja nation of Central Queensland. This is a compilation of songs collected from different places around the world, featuring Lori Bailey's haunting, ethereal voice. This is a beautifully arranged and produced recording.
Mike Raine - The Quintessential Shallow Man Order Number - AI0003
Mike's personal take on the world, conveyed in original songs and tunes. Mike collaborates with several other musicians on this album, which cover material written over several years. Mike is well known in his home area of the Huon Valley as a fine bass player and sound engineer. Here he collects together early examples of is own songwriting and performance.
The selection of music on this CD conveys well the sense of involvement and dedication that Ian brings to his music. This is another assured production from an artist who already has many CD releases to his credit. All of the tracks were recorded live in concert, and this immediacy and sharpness add to the sense of presence and vitality of his music. Listen to the sample track, here, and order the CD from our secure server.
Alexei Borisov - Polished Surface of a Table Order Number - ELCD037
"Alexei Borisov is able to surpass barriers and shape music alien to any conventionalism. This album has a mysterious character, oniric, surreal, where sound collages and audio distortion take an important role. Borisov explores sound in different constructions and aspects. The most radical areas of electroacoustic music and the most abstract ones of "ambient" constitute the stage where the pieces in this CD are developed." - Dominique Chevant ("Amazing Sounds")
Stanislav Kreitchi - Voices and Movement Order Number - ELCD023
"In and amongst the synthesised sounds are samples of all kinds of things from Wolves (used beautifully on "Winter" from his "Four Fantasies")... ... Tracks like "Spring" burst onto the ears with life: water, and birds, sampled and treated in the most inventive way possible. ... In most respects the album acts like a wake up call to your senses. A bloody hard album to review as it's simply in it's own genre, but if you're prepared to truly experience a drug free trip, then give this a shot. Seven tracks in all, ranging from reflective to eyes (and mouth) wide open. Kreitchi is certainly a composer at the cutting edge. - Dave W. Hughes ("Modern Dance")
Clare Gray's first CD is a remarkably strong and varied collection of songs, all from the pen of this young Tasmanian singer/guitarist. Her songs have depth and maturity - this is a very polished performance. With some excellent supporting musicians (Randal Muir on accordion and keyboards stands out here), Clare's CD looks set to be the first of many from a very talented and confident artist.
Alexander Volodin - Reflections of Time Order Number - ELCD043
In this album, Alexander Volodin blends sound textures, shapes echoes, sculpts silences on the surface of ripples, experiments, in short, with the patterns that determine the identity of each sound. He also makes use of architectures typical of "industrial music", and even of "ambient", so as to develop some passages. These eight compositions are treks towards the darkest areas of electroacoustic music.
- Dominique Chevant ("Amazing Sounds")
Nic Meredith - Lost in the Rhythm Order Number - NM0001
A first CD release from Cygnet-based rock musician Nic Meredith. Superb production and a big sound, and lyrics with interest, make Nic's CD stand out from the crowd. A variety of musical textures and moods is covered, all to great effect. Some great dancy tunes here, plus some more relaxed listening.
Hey Mook are - well - hard to describe adequately - punk folk might be an approximation. These Hobart based musicians write original material, performed in a style entirely their own . Listen! Who are the Mooks - Robbie McIntyre, Jonathan Cruickshank, Kim Pearce, Tor Freidheim, and John Button.
Ben Mackenzie - Let's Live as One Order Number - BM0302
The music on this family album is intended for upper primary school children through to adults (family album), and has been written over the past ten years. As a primary school teacher (State and Steiner trained with a musical-drama background), Ben wrote most of the songs in conjunction with a specific class he was teaching or for children in general.

It is designed to fully engage the child, not just as a source of entertainment, but to initiate learning and creativity through listening, talking, playing, imagining and singing.
Brendyn Montgomery & Mike Considine - Mountain Air Order Number - NM0001
Two talented players here add another recording in the tradition of the instrumental duo, playing Irish traditional music. Brendyn Montgomery is a talented young player on flute and whistle, accompanied here in fine style by Mike Considine on bouzouki, an instrument once rare in Irish music but increasingly employed for its clarity of sound and percussive drive.

Unamunos Quorum - After Image Order Number - FOOT04
Melbourne crew Unamunos Quorum have an unusual take on acapella - this album is all sound sourced from the human voice, but with varying degrees of electronic alteration, enhancement, deconstruction and layering. Based on vocal improvisation for the starting point, UQ move into the studio with their work and develop it further, pushing, as they say "the envelope of the vocal sonic spectrum"..
Downbeat is surely an appropriate word for this excellent CD of independent Aussie electronica. If we are looking for comparisons, Lorca has an early Portishead, slightly dark feel at times, that is derived in part from the pace and in part from Lorraine Campbell's sultry vocal style. The abstract feel works exceptionally well, as does the mix of analogue and digital sounds, and the mix of styles in different tracks ensures that the album has plenty of variety. Yet the feel and musical identity is retained throughout, and Lorca is surely an album that will stand the test of time.
broken android is an "audio slapstick" electronica project.from Queensland, which has featured in Triple J's Noisefest in October 2003, as well as leading ABC music show Sound Quality. Airom Bleicher's work on electronic sources also draws extensively on cello samples from improvisation by Lorraine Campbell. Generally rhythm-based, broken android is a step into intriguing musical territories, mixing a range of voice and instrument samples in with programmed sequences. Excellent mix and sound recording make this CD a pleasure to hear, and the rich variety of textures and sonic qualities will fascinate the open-eared listener.
Peter Frohmader - Advanced Alchemy of Music Order Number - ncd007
An artist who is rarely predictable - Peter Frohmader's work varies considerably from release to release as he explores different styles and sound textures. This CD is intense and beat based, with overlays of angst-ridden guitars and almost middle-eastern sounding melodic fragments. Slap and electro bass lines lay down a funky groove at times, in other places the 12 string acoustic guitar takes the dominant instrumental role, over a tense bell cymbal with djembe underneath. Fragments of moods come and go. All instruments on this album are played by Frohmader himself.
The first CD from electronica act Aurora Project. Influences from drum & bass, techno, ambient music.
"What I like in music is that the pieces that appeal most to me are those things that can wash past your ears and you may not even notice the sound, but if you concentrate, you can hear all the layers of complexity and aural intrigue.... Aurora does that for me." (Tim Ritchie, ABC Radio National "Sound Quality")
Micaela Nathan - Way of the Shadow Order Number - MNCD01
Some CDs are really hard to place in categories, and Way of the Shadow is certainly an example - starting out in a kind of ambient soundscape mood, it moves through almost classical territory into songs with a mediaval and mystical feel, and back into soundscapes and instrumental pieces. Micaela Nathan's quailty and experience as a vocalist, orchestral musician and arranger are evident, and the accompanying musicians are no less skilled than herself. What seems extraordinary is that this CD originates in Australia in the 21st century, as generally it has the feel of another time and place altogether.
John Hughes - Nocturnal Crustacean Order Number - JHCD01
This is a fine first album from Tasmanian-based singer and guitarist John Hughes. His accomplished guitar style is attractive listening in its own right, and his singing voice is relaxed and mellow, suiting his chosen material well. This ranges from the Jagger'Richards classic Ruby Tuesday, a Martin Carthy arrangement of the Bedmaking, and the lovely song Jeannie C.
