The October 2004 release of Dave McFarlane's latest studio album with band ONE DAY cranks up the voltage and throws the spotlight onto a warm and colorful, often larger than life picture as in his 4th independent album release, Dave draws on 20 years work in roots music styles.
Apparently setting out to break a record for the perhaps counter-cultural use of dobro, mandolin and lap steel in what amounts to a very radio-friendly contemporary folk/roots rock album, the most up tempo track Touched By The Hand reaches back into the pre-electricity era of parlour instruments to feature a multiple Banjo Mandolin instrumental contrasted against overdriven lap steel? there's something you don't hear too often!
Talking about writing the songs for Sometimes The Best Laid Plans Dave said "I try to write about things I understand. If my life were a movie, this would be the soundtrack? I feel the songs, because they're a part of me." Dave's clear and genuine lyrics are set against a warm backdrop of sparkling vocal harmony, strong rhythm and feature roots instrumentation resulting in an album of vibrant and uniquely Australian musical snapshots.
These songs feel like powerful and entertaining 'conversations' with a raw emotional honesty and back to the roots connection that a wide audience will relate to, as I certainly did! D.S.
