Chris Jacobson is an acoustic guitarist living in Launceston, Tasmania. The music presented on this his debut CD is all his own instrumental compositions, for solo acoustic guitar.
Stylistically, there are elements of blues, fingerstyle and classical techniques. Jacobson produces a fresh, clean and uncluttered sound, and his precise and delicate playing allows the music space to breathe. The high quality recording allows the remarkable tonal quality of his guitar to be revealed. His tracks are all locally themed, being named after locations in his home town of Launceston, but the music should have a universal appeal wherever one listens. At times he plays in a fingerstyle blues mode, as in the track "The Esplanade", and "Duck Reach" reminded me not a little of Leo Kottke. At others his music, for instance track nine "Railyards", seems straight from the heart of the Scottish folk music tradition. This slow air style tune would sound wonderful on pipes and fiddle. Some tracks, e.g. "St John St" have a more contemporary feel.
A fine album, that I immediately wanted to hear again.
