My own favourite tracks on this album are "Waltzing Too Long" and "Dark Cafe". Although "On The Silence" would slot comfortably into a Pogues album, Miller's tracks have a distinctive voice. If Peter Frohmader can be said to have a style, perhaps variation is it. This album shares the core elements of synthesizer domination, incorporation of samples, sections of fast (and fat) beat dominated sounds that have become something of a trade mark for this German artist. "Ethereal Dance" is a case in point of the latter - upbeat funky weirdness at is best, excelled by "Java Talk", a synth track that could have them rocking on the dance floors. Synthesizer fans with a taste for the eclectic and unpredictable will enjoy this a lot. On this as on one or two other previous CDs, Frohmader produces all the necessary phonics without the intervention of other musicians.

Downbeat is surely an appropriate word for this excellent CD of independent Aussie electronica. If we are looking for comparisons, Lorca has an early Portishead, slightly dark feel at times, that is derived in part from the pace and in part from Lorraine Campbell's sultry vocal style. The abstract feel works exceptionally well, as does the mix of analogue and digital sounds, and the mix of styles in different tracks ensures that the album has plenty of variety. Yet the feel and musical identity is retained throughout, and Lorca is surely an album that will stand the test of time.

broken android is an "audio slapstick" electronica project.from Queensland, which has featured in Triple J's Noisefest in October 2003, as well as leading ABC music show Sound Quality. Airom Bleicher's work on electronic sources also draws extensively on cello samples from improvisation by Lorraine Campbell. Generally rhythm-based, broken android is a step into intriguing musical territories, mixing a range of voice and instrument samples in with programmed sequences. Excellent mix and sound recording make this CD a pleasure to hear, and the rich variety of textures and sonic qualities will fascinate the open-eared listener.

An artist who is rarely predictable - Peter Frohmader's work varies considerably from release to release as he explores different styles and sound textures. This CD is intense and beat based, with overlays of angst-ridden guitars and almost middle-eastern sounding melodic fragments. Slap and electro bass lines lay down a funky groove at times, in other places the 12 string acoustic guitar takes the dominant instrumental role, over a tense bell cymbal with djembe underneath. Fragments of moods come and go. All instruments on this album are played by Frohmader himself.

Some CDs are really hard to place in categories, and Way of the Shadow is certainly an example - starting out in a kind of ambient soundscape mood, it moves through almost classical territory into songs with a mediaval and mystical feel, and back into soundscapes and instrumental pieces. Micaela Nathan's quailty and experience as a vocalist, orchestral musician and arranger are evident, and the accompanying musicians are no less skilled than herself. What seems extraordinary is that this CD originates in Australia in the 21st century, as generally it has the feel of another time and place altogether.
