This is three bobbins in one - the ebony "grandmother" has a smaller "mother" inside it visible through a slot on two sides. Inside that again is the tiny babe bobbin. Traditionally, inlaid stripes that run around the body of a lace bobbin are called tiger stripes. In the 18th century these were made of pewter. This model uses Australian bowyakka as the main wood, the centre section is of ebony and has 5 metal inlaid stripes that run around the bobbin.

Callitris is found as medium-sized trees or large shrubs, reaching 5-25 m tall (to 40 m in C. macleayana). The leaves are evergreen and scale-like, except young seedlings, where they are needle-like; in C. macleayana, needle-like leaves are found mixed with There are 13 species that occur in Australia, all except one occur in the drier zones.The wood of cypress-pines is light, soft and aromatic. It can be easily split and resists decay, cypress-pine also is termite resistant. It is used to make furniture, indoor and outdoor panelling, and fence posts. It is not a true pine but a cypress.

The lower part of this design is made in English Yew from very old trees in the churchyard at Staveley-in-Cartmel, Cumbria, UK.The head and neck are made from Lemonwood. The decorative feature formed from four inset bands is made from Tulipwood and Kingwood.

Released in 2010, this variation on the traditional theme of the "jingle" or loose rings bobbin is made in Gabon ebony with a central section of the highly decorative rare wood snakewood. The loose rings are all turned from the same piece of solid ebony that the bobbin is made from. Spangles for this bobbin are in semi-precious stone (haematite).

Bowyakka is a shapely small tree to 10m tall occuring in Queensland, Australia. Its bark is hard, fissured and dark grey with lighter patches. The species grows on shallow soil. It derives its botanical name from its small seeds.The timber is a dark brown-red in colour, fine textured and hard. It is a beautiful timber for small fine craft objects as it takes an excellent hard smooth finish.

This design has multiple layers of dyed laminated veneers in a variety of colours giving a spectacular and unique effect, inset in a gidgee bobbin. A member of the extensive acacia family, Gidgee is a large bush to small tree in size, growing best in semi-arid areas. It has an extremely hard and dense dark brown wood, which is used for traditional wooden implements by Aboriginal Australians. The wood may have spectacular figure - Ring Gidgee or Figured Gidgee.

Another member of the extensive acacia family, Gidgee occupies a similar range to Mulga and is another large bush to small tree in size, growing best in semi-arid areas. It has an extremely hard and dense dark brown wood, which is used for traditional wooden implements by Aboriginal Australians. The wood may have spectacular figure - Ring Gidgee or Figured Gidgee. As a turning material it has few equals, being superb to work and polishing almost naturally as it is worked, and producing very durable items.

This is the sandalwood most used commercially. A small tree typically 3 to 8 metres tall, occurring in the drier parts of South Australia and Western Australia. The wood has long been valued for its fragrance and use in perfume and incense making, and has been exported in large quantities in the past. Felling is controlled in some areas. The light brown wood turns and polishes superbly.

The bark is rough greyish brown near the base, shedding at about 4 metres up the trunk in strips to reveal a smooth blueish-grey to blueish-green to blueish-white surface above. Leaves dark green with tapered ends.

Mulga is found in the central and southern parts of Australia, and in areas of warm arid or semi-arid climate. Mulga is considered the most important fodder tree owing to its widespread distribution. The deep brown coloured wood is very dense and close textured, and takes a beautiful polish. Aborigines have long used Mulga for boomerangs and spears, and it is also a fuel wood. Mulga is widely used for woodturning today.
